How Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru’s Easter visit brought financial relief to indigent patients in Ebonyi
The Easter season is typically a period for sober reflection and sharing, but for sixteen patients at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki (AE-FUTHA), it became a season of unexpected liberation.
These individuals, who had received treatment but were detained in the male and female surgical wards due to unpaid medical expenses, suddenly found their financial burdens lifted. The wife of the Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, stepped in to defray bills totaling N3.2 million, allowing these patients to finally return to their homes and families.

Dr. Sorochi Otu, the Head of Department for Medical Social Work at the facility, could not hide her gratitude while commending the governor’s wife for her continuous philanthropic gestures. But the governor’s wife did not stop at the teaching hospital. Her train of compassion moved to the Rehabilitation Programme EFFATA in Ugbodo, located within Ebonyi Local Government Area. Here, she replicated her kind gesture by settling the bills of indigent patients and distributing relief materials to help them celebrate Easter with dignity.
Mr. Onyibe Nwiboko, the director in charge of the EFFATA facility, alongside the beneficiaries represented by Mr. John Nweke, expressed immense joy over the visit and the generous gifts provided.
Along with this, the Trinitarian Foundation for Orphans and Helpless also felt the impact of her Easter outreach, receiving financial assistance to help keep their operations running smoothly.
Rev. Sister Mary-Agnes Onyejiechi, who manages the foundation, poured out her gratitude, noting that such gestures are what keep these institutions going in difficult times.
A structural transformation for the juvenile remand home
Beyond the immediate payment of bills and distribution of food items, the governor’s wife is also looking at long-term community rehabilitation. During her visit to the Juvenile Remand Home, her contributions toward the reconstruction of the facility were highly lauded.
Mr. Emmanuel Nkwuda, Head of Department, Child Development in the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, specifically praised her for giving the remand home a much-needed structural face-lift. This shows a commitment not just to temporary relief, but to creating better environments for the reform and growth of young citizens.
