No fewer than 17 persons have reportedly been killed following an attack on Mbalom community in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State on Easter Sunday, according to residents.
The most recent incident further worsens ongoing security issues in areas of Benue where suspected armed groups have frequently attacked rural villages.

According to locals, the perpetrators invaded the neighbourhood, killing multiple individuals and setting buildings on fire.
Residents said the attackers stormed the community, killing several people and setting houses ablaze. The attacks has also resulted in destruction of several homes and properties, leaving survivors displaced.

A local resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “This is heartbreaking. People were caught unawares. Many are still missing.”
Several calls to the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, to confirm the tragic incident were not returned at the time of this report.
Meanwhile, in another incident, amid Easter celebrations, gunmen have attacked Ariko community in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State, targeting two Christian worship centres, killing at least seven persons and abducting several others.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, has thrown the community into panic.
Mark Bawa, the council member for Awon Ward, which includes Ariko District, confirmed the attack on Sunday.
