For a day meant to symbolize hope, renewal, and peaceful celebrations, Easter Sunday turned into a horrific nightmare for the residents of Mbalom in the Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State.

While families were observing the holiday, armed gunmen stormed the community, leaving behind a trail of blood, ashes, and broken spirits.

This latest tragedy is a painful reminder that the persistent security challenges in our rural communities are far from over. It is not just about the statistics or counting casualties; it is about the innocent lives cut short and the continuous failure of our leadership to guarantee basic safety for citizens.

An unprovoked invasion that shattered a holy celebration

According to accounts from the ground and international human rights watchdog Amnesty International, the attackers invaded the village between 5 PM and 6 PM on Sunday. The local government chairman, Timothy Adi, confirmed that the assault was entirely unprovoked, catching the villagers completely off guard.

So far, search teams have recovered about nine corpses, and the toll could rise as families continue searching for their missing loved ones in the surrounding bushes. Beyond the heavy loss of life, dozens of villagers sustained severe injuries, while many homes and local shops were set ablaze by the rampaging gunmen.

The sheer boldness of these attackers, operating on a major national holiday, shows just how vulnerable our communities have become.

A recurring pattern of neglect and displacement

In a very direct statement, Amnesty International did not mince words, noting that the government has failed the people of Benue State again and again.

This is not an isolated incident but part of a wider, disturbing pattern where rural dwellers are left at the mercy of non-state actors without any state protection.

The group pointed out that these frequent attacks do not just end with physical violence; they effectively strip thousands of people of their fundamental rights to life, movement, and access to livelihoods.

Currently, over 500,000 people are displaced across Benue alone, living in makeshift camps with extremely limited access to clean water, food, and basic healthcare.

The urgent need for proactive security measures across the country

Sadly, the violence over the Easter weekend was not limited to Benue. Similar attacks were recorded in Kaduna, where worshippers were targeted in churches, as well as in Katsina and Borno states where lives were lost and properties destroyed.

This nationwide spread of coordinated attacks highlights the urgent need for our security forces to move from being merely reactive to being strictly proactive.

Condemning these attacks after the damage has already been done has become a tired routine that offers no real comfort to the victims. The federal government must deploy actionable intelligence and adequate personnel to secure vulnerable communities before the attackers strike.
