Former Benue State Governor and former Senator representing Benue North-East, Gabriel Suswam, has announced his intention to return to the Senate in the 2027 general elections.

The two-term governor made the declaration at a public event over the weekend.
Suswam, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), said Benue politics has long been shaped by dominant party preferences among the people.
Suswam noted that the state was largely aligned with the PDP for its first 16 years before later shifting support to the APC.

“As a Benue son, I cannot be an exception to what my people want and believe. They now align more with the principles and philosophy of the APC,” he said.
He further stated that any active politician who still has the capacity to contest would naturally seek elective office.
According to him, his only viable option is a return to the Senate, as constitutional limitations prevent him from contesting the governorship again.
“I can’t go back to run for governor even if I want to; the constitution does not allow it. So, I will be contesting for the Senate,” he added.
