According to reports, the incident occurred at about 11:00 p.m. on 22 April 2026, when a fire broke out in a residential building within the quarters. It was suspected that the blaze may have been caused by the explosion of a gas cylinder, which rapidly spread to a nearby structure.

In a statement released by Captain AA Folorunsho, Director of Naval Information, personnel from Nigerian Navy Ship WEY, alongside the Naval Ordnance Depot (NOD), swiftly responded by deploying two fire trucks to the scene.

Reaffirming its role in emergency support, the Nigerian Navy stated its continued commitment to assisting civil authorities with logistics and rapid response capabilities when needed, in order to safeguard lives and property.
