Preliminary Voters’ Register

2027 Elections: INEC Opens Online Access to Preliminary Voters’ Register

Nigerians will soon access the preliminary voter register for the 2027 general elections directly on the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) official website.

The commission adopted the measure following widespread demands from civil society groups and voters to supplement traditional physical displays at Registration Areas with an online database.

In a statement issued on Monday, INEC explained that digital access will expand public participation, simplify identity verification, and boost overall trust in the electoral process.

“Accordingly, and in furtherance of its commitment to transparency, accessibility and public confidence in the electoral process, the Commission has decided to make available on its online platform https://display.inecnigeria.org the same Preliminary Register of Voters earlier displayed at the Registration Areas,” the statement said.

The commission added that publishing the preliminary voter register online will expand public access and complement the ongoing physical display exercise.

“This additional measure complements the physical display already undertaken and is intended to facilitate wider public access to the register,” it stated.

Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), signed the official statement.

INEC stated that it continues to process claims and objections arising from the preliminary registration exercise in accordance with the Electoral Act of 2026.

The commission clarified that it will finalize this verification process before certifying and publishing the final voter register on December 15, 2026.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and public accountability, INEC acknowledged the strong engagement of voters and key election stakeholders.

Backstory…

Under Section 19 of the Electoral Act 2026, INEC is required to make the Preliminary Voters’ Register available for public scrutiny both at registration areas nationwide and on its official website.

The commission conducted the physical display from October 9 to 15, 2026, allowing registered voters to inspect their details and submit claims or objections over omissions, incorrect particulars or the inclusion of ineligible persons.

However, by October 18, the deadline reported for the publication exercise ahead of the January 16, 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections, the register had not been uploaded online.
