LASTMA reports grim road safety figures as at least 69 people die in Lagos road accidents in Q1 2026, raising serious safety concerns across the state’s highways and urban roads.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) also reported that 246 others suffered varying levels of injuries during the same period, highlighting the continued impact of road crashes linked to traffic violations.
Speaking in an interview on Sunday, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the agency responded to more than 600 accident scenes between January and March.

He added that enforcement efforts were intensified during the period, with officials addressing over 900 infractions involving trucks and articulated vehicles.
According to him, about 4,900 patrol and intervention operations were carried out across the state, while electronic monitoring systems detected 17,942 traffic violations.
Bakare-Oki reaffirmed the agency’s strict position on compliance, stating that LASTMA maintains zero tolerance for traffic offences.
He explained that vehicles impounded for violations are promptly taken before the Lagos State Mobile Court for prosecution.
Despite the figures, he noted that improvements have been recorded in traffic management and response efficiency.
“For the first quarter, we recorded improvements in service delivery, especially in reducing travel time for residents,” he said.
He also disclosed that the agency undertook a full review of traffic equipment and recovery vehicles to improve emergency response times.
Bakare-Oki added that staff development has been prioritised through training and reorientation programmes aimed at boosting operational effectiveness.
He further revealed plans to train over 1,000 personnel through both internal and external programmes, with specialist consultants already engaged to strengthen capacity-building efforts across the agency.
