Residents across Lagos State turned out in large numbers on Saturday, April 25, 2026, for the return of the monthly Sanitation Day, as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu commended their participation.

In a statement released by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, the exercise was said to have recorded a strong turnout across various parts of the state, with residents actively cleaning their surroundings in response to the renewed environmental sanitation drive.

From Ikorodu to Badagry, Lagos Island and Lagos Mainland, as well as Alimosho, Ikeja, and Agege, residents were seen participating in cleanup activities.

The commissioner noted that the governor Sanwo-Olu appreciated the commitment displayed by Lagosians, describing it as a return to a culture that supports a cleaner and healthier environment.

“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu would like to acknowledge the enthusiasm of residents who woke up early to respond to the call to restore a culture that has kept our state clean and healthy,” the statement said.

Sanwo-Olu also quoted the governor as saying, “I thank Lagosians who participated in cleaning our environment as a step towards good health. This is patriotic; it reflects the Spirit of Lagos we always talk about. We should continue on this path.”

While commending residents, the governor Sanwo-Olu cautioned against improper waste disposal, particularly as the rainy season approaches.

He urged residents to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse, warning that such practices could worsen environmental challenges during the rains.

The statement further from Sanwo_Olu noted that the state government has intensified efforts to clear gutters and drainage systems across Lagos in preparation for heavy rainfall predicted by weather authorities.

It added that the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Strategy, is carrying out a public awareness campaign to discourage improper waste disposal and blockage of drainage channels.

The monthly sanitation exercise was reintroduced on March 14, 2026, when Governor Sanwo-Olu led top government officials in a monitoring and cleanup exercise along Agege Motor Road in Mushin.
