Local government workers in Borno State on Friday staged a protest over the non-implementation of the ₦70,000 minimum wage by the state government.
The demonstration, held in Maiduguri, was organized by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) as part of activities marking this year’s International Workers’ Day.
Speaking to journalists during the protest, the Borno State NLC Chairman, Yusuf Inuwa, said local government workers are among the hardest hit by the country’s ongoing economic challenges.
He explained that workers took to the streets to draw attention to their grievances.

“In the last two years, the national leadership of organized labour negotiated the ₦70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers. That makes it a law for all states to implement for their workers,” he said.
Inuwa noted that while the state government had implemented the new workers wage for primary school teachers and healthcare workers, local government employees were yet to be included.
He added, “Here in Borno, teachers and primary healthcare workers have been captured, but local government staff are yet to benefit. An injury to one is an injury to all.”
He described the situation as unacceptable, stressing that the affected workers are struggling to cope with rising inflation and increasing living costs.
