The Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare, pension payments, and ongoing civil service reforms as Nigeria joined the rest of the world to celebrate Workers’ Day.
Speaking during the May Day celebration in Kano, the governor Abba Yusuf stated that his government remains focused on ensuring fairness and dignity for both active workers and retirees, with special attention to clearing outstanding pension liabilities.
He said, “It is in the interest of equity and fairness that we are able to settle all debt obligations to our retirees who have served the state faithfully. This administration is committed to upholding the rights and dignity of workers.”
Governor Yusuf further noted that salaries in the state are being paid consistently and fully, adding that Kano has adopted what he described as a progressive wage structure, including the implementation of a ₦71,000 minimum wage.
According to him, this step reflects the government’s response to economic challenges and its broader goal of improving the living standards of workers.
“We have maintained prompt and full payment of salaries and taken bold steps to improve workers’ welfare,” Yusuf said.
He also highlighted reforms within the civil service, including the creation of the Local Government Service Commission, which he said has strengthened career development and improved uniform standards across government institutions.
On pensions, he revealed that the minimum pension in the state has been raised from ₦5,000 to ₦20,000, describing it as a significant intervention aimed at improving the welfare of retirees.
“We have demonstrated our commitment not only in words but through concrete action,” the governor added.
He further explained that ongoing training programmes for civil servants—covering areas such as ICT, artificial intelligence, financial management, anti-corruption, and leadership development—are designed to enhance efficiency and prepare workers for future challenges.
“Our goal is to build a competent, modern, and forward-looking civil service that meets the demands of today’s governance,” he said.
The May Day event in Kano was attended by labour leaders, workers’ representatives, and government officials, who commended the reforms while urging sustained implementation.
