The Labour Party (LP) has set its presidential nomination form at ₦50 million and granted Abia State Governor Alex Otti free expression of interest and nomination forms for his second-term re-election bid.

The LP’s national press secretary, Ken Asogwa, revealed this in a statement on Sunday outlining the party’s 2026 primary election calendar.

According to Asogwa, the party will sell nomination forms from May 6 to May 16, and candidates must submit completed forms between May 17 and May 18.

He added that it will screen governorship and House of Assembly candidates on May 20, while it will screen National Assembly and presidential candidates on May 22. The party will release the results on May 23.

He also said the party will hold its National Assembly and presidential primaries on May 29, while it has fixed the House of Assembly and governorship primaries for May 27.

LP Form Costs

Additionally, Asogwa stated that the party set the expenses for the presidential expression of interest form at N10 million and the nomination form at N40 million, totalling N50 million.

He continued by saying that candidates for governor must pay N25 million, while Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly forms cost N10 million, N5 million, and N3 million, respectively.

However, Asogwa stated that the party has exempted the Abia governor from paying the fees.

The statement reads, “His Excellency Alex Otti shall be presented both his Expression of Interest Form and the Nomination Form free by the NWC of the party.”

The LP spokesperson also noted that the gesture is “in appreciation of the good work he is doing as a governor which has projected the party in a good light”.

BACKSTORY…

This moves comes just few weeks after the Abia State APC warned Otti against expressing support for the re-election of President Tinubu through intermediaries.

The party also claimed that the governor’s chances of securing a second term are below 30 percent.

Governor Otti

Speaking through its Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, the APC was responding to remarks made by Ginger Onwusibe, a member of the House of Representatives under the Labour Party, who stated that Governor Alex Otti would deliver Abia’s votes for Tinubu in the 2027 election.

The APC further alleged that such claims reflect what it described as desperate political survival strategies within the governor’s camp.
