The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has described the defection of former presidential candidate Peter Obi from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) as a bold and necessary move.
Tanko explained that the decision by Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso to join the NDC was driven by what he described as a toxic political climate.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV on Monday, he argued that legal uncertainties and tight electoral timelines within the ADC made it nearly impossible for their candidacy to progress, leaving them with no choice but to act in order to safeguard democracy and strengthen the opposition.
He pointed out that with deadlines fast approaching, there was simply not enough time to navigate the legal process. According to him, moving from the Federal High Court to the Appeal Court and potentially the Supreme Court within such a short window would be unrealistic.
Tanko added that the situation appeared to be a setback not only for Obi’s ambition but also for the ADC itself. He maintained that the decision to leave was a strategic step to protect democratic values, assuring that members of the Obidient Movement fully support Obi, Kwankwaso, and others in seeking a viable platform to continue their political pursuit.
