The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has shut down a rice milling facility in Kano State over alleged environmental violations, following complaints from residents about dust pollution and offensive odours linked to its operations.

The enforcement operation, carried out on Monday, was led by NESREA Zonal Director, Abdulraheem Mudashir. He said the action was triggered by repeated complaints from people in the area who accused the factory of degrading their environment and disrupting daily activities.

According to him, inspections revealed that the facility was not complying with the National Environmental Regulations on Food, Beverages and Tobacco Sector (2009), particularly provisions on permit conditions and pollution control standards.

He explained that the company had already received three compliance and abatement notices but failed to implement the required corrective actions.

Mudashir added that the factory was found releasing excessive dust into surrounding areas while also producing a strong odour that affected nearby households.

He noted that despite repeated warnings, the management did not take steps to meet environmental requirements, which led to the sealing of the facility.

He further warned that any establishment that refuses to comply with environmental regulations would face shutdown.

NESREA stated that the enforcement exercise is part of its ongoing efforts to ensure industrial compliance with environmental laws and to safeguard public health across the country.
