The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained Saleh Mamman, the former Minister of Power who was recently convicted.
Commission Chairman Ola Olukoyede said officers arrested Mamman in Kaduna at about 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
After the former minister’s conviction on corruption-related charges, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered security agencies to arrest him wherever they found him.
Recall that Judge Omotosho found Mamman guilty on a 12-count charge of money laundering and diversion of public funds totalling about N22 billion on Wednesday.
After ruling that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, the court sentenced the former minister to a total of 75 years in prison across the charges, with the sentences to run consecutively.
The judge also decided that Mamman’s arrest date would be the start of the sentence.
Additionally, the court further ordered the offender to return the outstanding balance of the diverted funds linked to the Mambilla and Zungeru hydroelectric power projects. It further directed him to forfeit all money and property recovered from him to the Federal Government.
