Members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Cross River State on Friday affirmed Dr. Effiong Nyong as the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election through a voice vote.

The affirmation exercise took place at the ADC’s state secretariat on Diamond Road, Calabar, where a significant number of party members gathered to endorse the sole aspirant.

The process was overseen by the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Dr. MacFarlane Ejah, who also serves as the ADC’s state secretary, in the presence of the Screening Committee Chairman, Dr. Minika Bassey, and other party stakeholders.

Dr. Ejah stated that the exercise was conducted in line with the guidelines and recent directives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“What we have just done is in consonance with the latest directives of INEC. We have formally affirmed and presented Dr. Effiong Efa Nyong as our flag bearer for the 2027 governorship election in Cross River State,” he said.

In his remarks, Dr. Nyong, a veteran broadcaster and former state party chairman, explained that his decision to contest the governorship for a second time is driven by his passion for the people of Cross River State and his determination to restore development and good governance.

He expressed concern over what he described as the declining state of development in the state, lamenting rising poverty levels and infrastructural decay.

He recalled Cross River’s historical prominence, noting that the state once served as a major administrative and educational centre during colonial times, with strong systems in civil service, sports, and education.

Nyong stated that previous generations upheld high standards that have since deteriorated, leading to current socio-economic challenges.

He further stressed the need for collective action to reverse what he described as the state’s downward trajectory and restore its former glory.

He also raised concerns over multiple taxation, describing it as a burden that has worsened poverty and discouraged investment in the state.
