Popular South African rapper Nasty C has credited Nigerian music star Wizkid for helping push African music onto the global stage.

Speaking during a podcast interview, the Zulu Man With Some Power rapper said Wizkid’s 2016 collaboration with Canadian superstar Drake on the hit song One Dance played a major role in opening international doors for modern African artistes.

According to Nasty C, the success of the collaboration significantly boosted Afrobeats’ global presence and enhanced the genre’s commercial appeal, prompting some rappers to transition from hip-hop to Afrobeats.

“Wizkid and Drake’s collaboration on One Dance opened the door for African artists. After that collaboration, African music received a huge boost. During some of my interviews in Nigeria and Ghana, hosts told me that some rappers even switched to Afrobeats because of how lucrative it became after Wizkid worked with Drake,” Nasty C said.

Reports show that Drake’s One Dance, which featured Wizkid and British singer Kyla, became the first song in Spotify history to surpass one billion streams, earning a Guinness World Record.

The track, which blends Afrobeats, dancehall and pop influences, is widely regarded as one of the songs that brought global recognition to Afrobeats.

Drake had also acknowledged in a past interview that Wizkid made significant contributions to the song.

Wizkid was credited on the record as a performer, co-songwriter and co-producer.
