Former Secretary-General of the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, Anthony Sani, on Wednesday stated that the North is likely to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 in order to strengthen its chances of reclaiming the presidency in 2031.

Speaking during an interview, Anthony Sani said the region would largely back Tinubu because power is expected to return to the North after eight years of Southern leadership.

“President Bola Tinubu is expected to secure majority support from the North because the region hopes to produce the President in 2031 after the South completes eight years in office,” he said.

Anthony Sani also claimed that the South-East would overwhelmingly support the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, due to zoning considerations.

According to him, “The politics of identity and zoning would make it difficult for Igbos to vote against Peter Obi in 2027, especially since the presidency is currently in the South and is expected to shift to the North in 2031.”

He further argued that the North remains skeptical of Obi’s promise to serve only one term if elected president.

“The North does not trust Peter Obi’s one-term pledge. There are also concerns that he has not openly condemned IPOB and Nnamdi Kanu,” Sani added.
