Veteran Nollywood comic actor Nkem Owoh, popularly known as Osuofia, has described his entry into acting as accidental.
Nkem Owoh said he originally intended to remain a scriptwriter, but was encouraged by colleagues who noticed his comedic talent behind the scenes and pushed him to appear on screen.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Selah Meditate Podcast, Nkem Owoh explained that an early television opportunity helped launch his career.
“My coming in front of the camera was an accident. I was a scriptwriter behind the scenes and people started telling me to start performing in front of the camera,” he said.
“I remember ATV created a 7-minute programme for me to do stand-up comedy in the 80s. They told me to come in front of the camera because I was making people laugh behind the scenes. With pressure from people, I eventually agreed, and I realized audiences enjoyed it. That was how my acting career began,” he added.
He also reflected on the challenges of fame, noting that it significantly affected his personal freedom.
“Fame took away my freedom. A lot of people want to be celebrities, but they only see the benefits and not the downsides. When you become famous, you can’t do a lot of the things you used to do freely,” he said.
