Lagos 2027: ADC chairmen call on NWC to uphold governorship primary result

Chairmen of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) across various local government areas in Lagos State have urged the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to honour the outcome of the governorship primary and respect the decision made by party members.

The appeal was contained in a communiqué issued after a meeting of the Forum of Local Government Area Chairmen of the ADC in Lagos State.

In the statement signed by the forum’s Chairman, Anaere Ugochukwu, and Secretary, Oluwabukola Okeowo, the group alleged that there were attempts to overturn the choice made by members during the governorship primary process.

The chairmen expressed confidence in the leadership of the Lagos State ADC Chairman, George Ashiru, and the State Executive Committee, praising them for their handling of party affairs.

According to the forum, the credibility and future growth of any political party depend on adherence to internal democracy and respect for the will of party members.

They insisted that votes cast during the primary election should remain the basis for candidate selection and should not be undermined by actions capable of eroding members’ trust in the party.

“As leaders at the grassroots, we believe the strength and integrity of any political party are rooted in adherence to democratic values. The collective decision of members must be respected at all times,” the communiqué read.

The group stated that the ADC’s performance in future elections would largely depend on the confidence and trust of party supporters across Lagos State.

They also urged the party’s national leadership to carefully address concerns surrounding the governorship primary and ensure that any action taken aligns with the party’s constitution and democratic principles.

The chairmen warned that any move perceived as disregarding the wishes of members could weaken the party’s grassroots support and negatively affect its electoral chances.

They further appealed to the National Secretariat and the NWC to allow the mandate given during the primary election to stand, describing it as essential for maintaining unity and stability within the party.

According to the forum, respecting the outcome of the primary would strengthen the ADC’s chances of becoming a major political force in Lagos ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group added that commitment to democratic values remains vital for the party to consolidate its growing support base and improve its electoral prospects in the state.
