Peter Okoye reacts after fan tells him to retire from music because of his age

Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P and one half of the defunct P-Square duo, has reacted after a social media user suggested that he should retire from music because of his age.

The fan, identified on X as OloriOfOloris, argued that Peter Okoye, who is 44 years old, is approaching 50 and should no longer be making Afrobeats music.

Sharing a clip from one of Mr P’s music videos, the user wrote: “I don’t get why an almost 50-year-old man is still singing like this. It’s okay to retire.”

The comment sparked reactions online, with media personality Do2dtun defending the singer and criticizing what he described as age discrimination.

Do2dtun pointed out that several international stars, including Celine Dion, Shakira, Beyoncé, and the Backstreet Boys, are older than Peter Okoye and still actively performing.

“Peter is 44 but you dimwits are so ageist that you don’t even know what you bring down in the name of clicks,” he wrote.

Reacting to the debate, Mr P suggested that those calling for his retirement were disappointed fans of the now-defunct P-Square group.

He accused critics of hypocrisy, arguing that they celebrate international stars such as Usher, Beyoncé, and Chris Brown for doing the same things they criticize him for.

“After they realized those narratives didn’t work, they came with another one: ‘Now he is too old to be singing and dancing.’

“Meanwhile, these same people celebrate and hype Usher, Beyoncé, and Chris Brown for doing exactly the same thing,” he wrote in part.
