Domestic Abuse

Injured 18-year-old wife pleads for husband’s release despite viral domestic abuse videos

A viral video showing a young woman, reportedly an 18-year-old wife, with visible injuries has triggered widespread concern and outrage across social media, as many users call for urgent action over alleged domestic abuse.

The footage, shared on Monday by Instagram user Michigabbi, shows the woman with facial injuries while a man identified as her husband is seen in a tense confrontation with neighbours who had reportedly stepped in over the alleged abuse.

In the video, concerned residents can be heard urging the man to stay away from the woman as he attempts to pull her closer during the altercation.

“Madam, leave my wife. You want to drag my wife with me,” the man is heard saying amid the exchange.

One of the neighbours accused him of repeatedly assaulting the young woman, alleging that she has suffered ongoing abuse.

“You want to kill her. This girl is just 18 years old. This man is brainwashing her; he is beating her daily,” the individual alleged.

As the video spread online, it generated intense reactions from social media users, many of whom expressed concern about the woman’s wellbeing and safety.

In a separate video that later surfaced online, the young woman was seen at what appeared to be a hospital in the company of human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu.

During the interaction, Gwamnishu spoke about efforts to ensure that the man was held accountable. However, the young woman pleaded with those involved not to have her husband arrested.

“Please, I am begging you, people. It will be as if it is my fault. The mother does not like me, please. Let me just carry myself and be going,” she said.

She further stated, “I am not going to the marriage again; you people should leave him. I won’t go to the marriage again; don’t arrest him.”

The woman’s emotional appeal has since triggered further debate online, with many observers expressing concern about her reluctance to pursue legal action despite the alleged abuse.

Several social media users have called on relevant authorities and support organisations to intervene, while others stressed the importance of ensuring the young woman receives medical attention, protection, and counselling.

The incident continues to attract widespread attention online as many Nigerians await further developments and possible action from relevant authorities.
