JUST IN: Sowore Appears in Court After Transfer From Kuje Correctional Centre

Human rights activist and 2027 presidential candidate of African Action Congress(AAC), Omoyele Sowore has arrived at the Federal High Court in Abuja as his trial continues.

Prison authorities transported the activist, who is also known for founding Sahara Reporters, from the Kuje Correctional Centre, where he is currently being held in custody, to the court.

Additionally, officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) immediately took custody of him and subsequently handed him over to correctional authorities.

Earlier, Sowore arrived at the court on Wednesday and appeared relaxed as he smiled and exchanged words with several lawyers.

Meanwhile, a number of activists and his supporters have gathered at the court premises as they await the next stage of the proceedings.

Court Revokes Sowore’s Bail

Justice Mohammed Garba Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja ealier revoked the bail earlier granted to Omoyele Sowore, following his failure to appear in court for trial.

The judge withdrew the bail on Tuesday after Sowore’s absence during the scheduled proceedings.

During the session, prosecution counsel, Kehinde Akinlolu, SAN, informed the court that Sowore was aware of the hearing date but still failed to appear, arguing that his absence was part of efforts to delay the trial.

Backstory…

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday ordered the remand of Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of African Action Congress (AAC), in Kuje Correctional Centre.

The presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Umar issued the order following the revocation of Sowore’s bail last week.

Justice Umar also adjourned the matter until June 24 for the hearing of the application adding that the defendant be kept in the facility until Wednesday.

Furthermore, the court issued the arrest warrant after the defendant failed to appear for the continuation of his trial, during which he was expected to begin presenting his defence.
