The Kwankwasiyya Movement has said it remains open to criticism but will not tolerate what it described as false and defamatory claims against its leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
In a statement released by its spokesperson, Habeeb Sale Mohammed, the group stressed that while democracy allows room for differing opinions, there is a clear difference between constructive criticism and deliberate falsehood.
According to the movement, it supports freedom of expression and welcomes factual criticism aimed at strengthening democracy, but warned against the spread of malicious allegations.
The group noted that Kwankwaso, with his long record in public service, has consistently shown tolerance toward opposition and criticism, adding that neither he nor the movement is afraid of political scrutiny.
However, it insisted it would not stay silent when faced with what it called deliberate lies, character attacks, and attempts to damage the reputation of its leader.
The movement warned that anyone spreading false claims against Kwankwaso should be prepared to defend such allegations through legal means.
It also maintained that public discourse must be guided by facts, evidence, and honesty, stressing that no individual, regardless of position, is above the law.
The statement comes after remarks allegedly made by Primate Elijah Ayodele questioning Kwankwaso’s relationship with Peter Obi.
The controversy follows reports that Kwankwaso, now the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, is considering a N10 billion defamation suit over the comments.
BACKSTORY:
The warning follows growing political tensions surrounding the newly formed alliance between Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Peter Obi under the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Since Kwankwaso emerged as the vice-presidential candidate of the party, his partnership with Obi has generated wide reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape, with supporters viewing it as a strong opposition bloc.
The latest controversy was sparked by comments reportedly made by Primate Elijah Ayodele during a sermon, where he questioned Kwankwaso’s loyalty to Obi and alleged that he could betray the alliance.
Those remarks drew criticism from the Kwankwasiyya Movement, which described them as false and damaging, prompting threats of legal action to protect Kwankwaso’s reputation and the integrity of the movement.
