Abduction Crisis: Oyo Relaxes Curfew Measures in 10 LGAs

The Oyo State Government has lifted the curfew and movement restriction previously imposed on 10 local government areas as part of efforts to facilitate the rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers of schools in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, announced the development, adding that said the decision followed a review of the security situation in the affected areas.

The statement reads, “The Oyo State Government has lifted the curfew imposed on 10 local government areas following the recent kidnapping incident in Oriire. Residents can now resume their normal activities.”

Oyelade, also assured residents that the state government would continue to monitor developments closely and work with security agencies to ensure lasting peace and safety.

He  reassured the public that security agencies are actively taking measures to crush the current kidnapping wave and prevent future occurrences.

Furthermore, while officials withheld specific details regarding the outcomes of ongoing security operations, the government strictly urged citizens to maintain high vigilance and actively cooperate with law enforcement by supplying actionable intelligence to bolster public safety.

In a decisive move to tackle rising crime and insecurity, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde earlier banned commercial motorbike operators, commonly known as Okada riders from operating across the state between 10:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.

Governor Makinde announced the strict new curfew on Friday, June 5, during a statewide broadcast. His address following mounting public alarm over the recent wave of kidnappings targeting teachers and children in the Oriire Local Government Area.

Governor Makinde emphasized that the restriction forms a vital part of his administration’s broader strategy to fortify regional security. The government intends for this measure to disrupt criminal operations and actively support ongoing security forces’ efforts to rescue the victims currently held in captivity.
