2027: NDC Signals Readiness for Opposition Coalition

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has signaled its readiness to form alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying it is open to engaging with other opposition parties, while expressing confidence that any coalition would eventually support its candidates.

The party’s national leader, Seriake Dickson, made this known during an interview on Channels Television’s programme, Sunday Politics.

According to Dickson, the NDC remains willing to participate in opposition talks as part of efforts to build a stronger political front ahead of the elections.

He, however, stressed that neither he nor any member of the party would want to pre-empt the outcome of such discussions, while expressing optimism that any eventual alliance would align behind the NDC’s candidates.

The serving senator representing Bayelsa State also noted that his comments were not meant to suggest the party was superior to others, adding that after the nomination process, political actors would move into a broader phase of negotiations and coalition-building.

The development comes amid legal uncertainty surrounding the party, following a ruling by a Federal High Court in Lokoja which vacated an earlier judgment directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC as a political party.

BACKSTORY…

Talks of opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections have gained momentum as political parties seek ways to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

In Nigeria’s political history, coalitions have played a major role in shaping electoral outcomes, most notably in 2013 when opposition parties merged to form the APC, which went on to defeat the then-ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the 2015 presidential election.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress has recently emerged as one of the new opposition platforms seeking relevance ahead of 2027, although its legal status remains uncertain following a Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja that overturned an earlier order for its registration by INEC.

With growing dissatisfaction among some opposition figures and discussions on building a united front, the NDC’s openness to coalition talks reflects broader efforts by smaller and emerging parties to position themselves strategically ahead of the next election cycle.
