Burna Boy makes history as first male artiste to top Spotify Global Music Video Chart

Nigerian music star Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has made history as the first male artiste to top Spotify’s newly introduced Global Music Video Chart.

The Grammy-winning singer achieved the milestone with “Dai Dai,” his official 2026 FIFA World Cup song featuring Colombian superstar Shakira, becoming both the first African and first male artiste to reach the top of the chart.

The track also climbed to a new peak of No. 13 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100, with industry projections suggesting it could break into the top 10 following Burna Boy and Shakira’s performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final Halftime Show on Sunday.

In addition, “Dai Dai” remains the most-streamed music video of 2026 on YouTube, amassing nearly 500 million views, and recently reached No. 1 on the Apple Music Global Songs Chart.

The success of the song has also boosted Burna Boy’s global streaming achievements. He has extended his record as the African artiste with the highest number of monthly listeners in Spotify history, surpassing 53 million monthly listeners.

He has also set another milestone as the African artiste with the most monthly listeners on YouTube Music, where he now boasts more than 600 million monthly listeners.

BACKSTORY:

Burna Boy, born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, is one of Africa’s most successful contemporary music stars and a Grammy Award-winning artiste whose influence has helped propel Afrobeats onto the global stage. Since breaking into the mainstream with songs such as Like to Party, Ye, and Anybody, he has built an international reputation through chart-topping albums, sold-out arena tours, and collaborations with some of the world’s biggest musicians.

His global breakthrough accelerated with the release of African Giant (2019), which earned a Grammy nomination, before he won the Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album with Twice as Tall in 2021. Since then, Burna Boy has continued to break records on major streaming platforms, becoming the first African artiste to headline several international stadiums and consistently ranking among the continent’s most-streamed musicians.

His latest milestone comes through “Dai Dai,” the official song for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, recorded with Colombian superstar Shakira. The collaboration became one of the tournament’s defining anthems, gaining widespread popularity among football fans and dominating streaming platforms throughout the competition. Burna Boy and Shakira also performed the song during the first-ever FIFA World Cup Final Halftime Show, a performance that further boosted its global reach.

The success of Dai Dai has translated into several achievements, including topping Spotify’s newly launched Global Music Video Chart, climbing the Billboard Hot 100, and recording hundreds of millions of streams across Spotify and YouTube. The song has also strengthened Burna Boy’s position as one of Africa’s most commercially successful artistes, extending his records for monthly listeners on major streaming platforms and underscoring the growing global appeal of Afrobeats.
