Nigerian entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has celebrated his daughter Adaeze’s engagement to a woman.
Charly Boy shared a video from the engagement on his Instagram page on Thursday. He described the couple as his “beautiful Princess and her Husband” and asked his fans to send them their best wishes.
“My beautiful Princess and her Husband. “Folks, wish dem well for me,” he wrote.
Adaeze also announced the engagement on Instagram, sharing a photo of herself with her partner alongside the caption, “WE’RE ENGAGED!”
She shared a note expressing excitement about their future together and accompanied the post with the hashtag #MrsAndMrs.
“Here’s to a lifetime of love, laughter, growth, and making beautiful memories together. I can’t wait for everything God has in store for us. Forever sounds even sweeter with you,” she wrote.
Social media users have reacted to the posts with mixed opinions about the interaction.
Area Fada, also known as Charly Boy, has previously spoken publicly about his family and his unconventional views on societal issues.
Adaeze, one of the performer’s children, has also appeared in interviews about the family.
Backstory…
The key backstory here is that Charly Boy’s support for his daughter’s same-sex relationship did not begin with the engagement announcement. It goes back several years and followed a very public period of adjustment for him.
In 2020, Charly Boy revealed that his daughter had come out to him as a lesbian in 2016. He said he initially struggled with the revelation despite having previously spoken in support of LGBT rights.
He described concerns about stigma, religion and discrimination, but said he ultimately chose to preserve his relationship with his daughter and accept her for who she was.
His position became even clearer in a 2022 interview, where he said having a lesbian daughter did not make her a bad person and recalled how he deliberately avoided allowing the revelation to damage their relationship.
He also said his children were raised to be able to speak openly with him about their lives and relationships.
