President Donald Trump jokingly hinted about seeking a fourth term during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Friday in Washington, D.C., teasing the gathering of journalists with what he called an exclusive “scoop”.
Video footage shared on X on Saturday by the account RapidResponse47 showed Trump wearing a red “Trump 2028” hat as he addressed the audience at the rescheduled event, held at the Waldorf Astoria.
“I’m pleased to announce my intention to, and this is somewhat of a scoop my intention to run for a fourth term as President of the United States. I will be doing that. I will be having an official… It should be easy. I’m getting very good at running for president,” Trump said.
“I won three times. Did very well the second time, by the way. It’s a rigged election, but we’ll have to talk about it,” he said.
The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution caps a president at two terms, making Trump’s third term legally impossible under the current Constitution. Friday marked Trump’s first appearance at the annual gala as sitting president, having boycotted the event throughout his initial term as well as the opening months of his second.
The banquet was postponed from its original April date after gunfire erupted, forcing authorities to evacuate attendees—including Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump—before police arrested a suspect.
Organisers relocated the rescheduled banquet to the Waldorf Astoria Washington DC, ending the event’s 58-year tradition at the Washington Hilton.
