The United States Department of State has announced that it will issue 250,000 limited-edition commemorative passports as part of celebrations marking the country’s 250th anniversary.
The Department of State, which previously issued the commemorative documents only to in-person applicants at the Washington, D.C. passport office, will distribute them across its 27 passport agencies nationwide beginning next month. Trump becomes the first living president to appear on an official U.S. passport.
In a statement released on Thursday, the department described the American passport as more than a travel document, saying it represents national identity and serves as a reminder of the bond shared by U.S. citizens around the world.
The statement reads, “An American passport is more than just a travel document; it’s a physical piece of our national identity, a reminder that wherever you are in the world, you are an American.”
The department also said it introduced the limited-edition passports in response to overwhelming public demand.
“The State Department is making 250K historic passports available to celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary and our incredible history and heritage,” it added.
The commemorative passports are among several initiatives planned ahead of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026.

To commemorate the milestone, federal agencies, state governments, and cultural institutions launched a series of nationwide initiatives, including exhibitions, educational programmes, public events, and limited-edition memorabilia celebrating the nation’s founding in 1776.
The limited-edition passports were introduced as one of the flagship commemorative items for the anniversary.
Recall that the United Stated had earlier announced that it will begin introducing a limited-edition passport featuring the image of President Donald Trump.
