The US Mission in Nigeria has cautioned Nigerians against using artificial intelligence, AI-edited passport photographs or other digital editing tools to modify photos submitted with US passport applications.
The mission posted the warning on its official X account on Saturday, emphasizing that officials will reject digitally enhanced or filtered passport photos.
The mission stated, “Reminder! Do NOT use AI or digital editing tools on your passport photo. We will not accept photos that are edited or filtered.”
It further stressed that applicants must submit recent passport photos taken within the last six months that accurately depict their current appearance.
According to the mission, officials need this measure so that United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers can quickly verify travelers’ identities.
“Your photo should be recent (taken within the past six months) and look like you (the TSA or CBP agent must be able to tell it’s you),” it added.
The mission also stated that providing a digitally altered passport photograph could severely delay application processing.
Consequently, it advised applicants to review official US passport photo criteria for specific requirements before submitting their applications.

The latest advisory against AI-edited passport comes amid a series of tougher immigration measures introduced by the United States in recent weeks, signalling a more stringent approach to visa processing and immigration compliance.
The U.S. recently announced the suspension of routine visa processing at its embassy in Abuja effective August 1, while also warning that foreign nationals who overstay their visas could face stricter immigration sanctions, including possible future travel restrictions.
The fresh warning against AI-edited passport photographs is widely seen as part of the same increased effort to tighten document verification and strengthen the integrity of America’s immigration system.
