Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has appealed to United States President Donald Trump to pay close attention to the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.
Davido made the appeal in a post on his X account on Tuesday, raising concerns over the growing tension in the state and the possibility of violence, intimidation and disruption of the electoral process ahead of the poll.
In his post, the singer urged Trump and the international community to monitor developments surrounding the election and ensure that residents are able to exercise their constitutional right to vote without fear.
Davido said the people of Osun State deserve a peaceful and transparent election, stressing that voters should be protected and their votes respected.
He wrote:
“President Donald Trump, I am calling your attention to the situation in Osun State, Nigeria, as we approach the election.
“There are growing concerns about tension and the possibility of violence, intimidation, or disruption of the democratic process. Osun people deserve to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely, peacefully, and without fear.
“I appeal to the United States and the international community to pay close attention to the election and encourage all relevant authorities to ensure that every voter is protected and every vote is respected.
“We do not want bloodshed. We do not want intimidation. We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election. @realDonaldTrump.”
BACKSTORY:
The forthcoming Osun State governorship election has continued to generate political tension, with major political parties and their candidates intensifying their campaigns ahead of the poll. The contest has attracted significant attention as political actors seek to secure the support of voters across the state.
Concerns over the security and credibility of the election have also featured prominently in the build-up to the poll, particularly amid allegations and counter-allegations among political camps. Stakeholders have repeatedly called on security agencies and electoral authorities to ensure that voters are allowed to participate without intimidation or interference.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is responsible for conducting the election, while security agencies are expected to maintain law and order before, during and after the exercise.
Against this backdrop, Davido, who hails from Osun State, has joined calls for a peaceful and credible election. The singer has previously shown interest in political developments in the state and has publicly commented on issues surrounding the Osun governorship contest.
His latest intervention came as he appealed directly to US President Donald Trump and the international community to pay attention to developments in Osun, warning against violence, intimidation and any attempt to undermine voters’ rights.
Davido’s call adds to growing public attention surrounding the election, with stakeholders and residents expected to watch closely as the state prepares for the governorship poll.
