Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has warned that accepting unverified academic credentials among politicians and public officials could weaken societal standards and jeopardise Nigeria’s future.
Obi issued the warning in a post on his X handle on Tuesday, stressing that the issue should not be reduced to any individual but viewed through the broader lenses of accountability, integrity and the values being passed on to future generations.
According to the former Anambra State governor, Nigerians should resist the tendency to overlook questionable, missing or unverified academic credentials simply because they belong to political allies or leaders they support.
He argued that the process through which individuals attain positions of responsibility is as important as their performance in office, stressing that leadership must be rooted in transparency and compliance with established standards.
Obi warned that normalising the failure to verify basic academic credentials could set a dangerous precedent, potentially allowing unqualified individuals to occupy sensitive professional and public positions.
He added that such a development could weaken public institutions and erode confidence in professions that require proper training, qualifications and certification.
The former governor maintained that Nigeria must not compromise its future for short-term political interests, insisting that truth, accountability and due process should apply equally to everyone, regardless of social status or political affiliation.
Obi urged Nigerians to uphold principles rather than sentiments and to prioritise the country’s long-term progress over political convenience.
He maintained that building a better Nigeria would require both citizens and leaders to uphold the right values, even when doing so is difficult or politically inconvenient.

The forthcoming Osun State governorship election has been preceded by heightened political activities and growing concerns over security and the treatment of opposition figures.
Political parties have continued to mobilise supporters across the state, while allegations of intimidation, arrests and threats have emerged from different political camps. The situation has increased calls for security agencies to maintain neutrality and ensure that all parties and voters can participate freely in the electoral process.
The latest controversy followed the circulation of a video allegedly involving Senator Francis Fadahunsi, in which he was said to have made threatening comments concerning members and supporters of the Accord Party in Ijeshaland.
The allegation prompted the Imole Campaign Council to demand Fadahunsi’s arrest and prosecution, arguing that the reported comments constituted a threat to Accord members.
Governor Ademola Adeleke has now called for an investigation into the allegation, describing the reported comments as a potential national security concern. He has also raised a separate allegation concerning the reported detention and planned arrest of Accord Party leaders ahead of the election.
The competing allegations have added to concerns surrounding the security and credibility of the Osun governorship poll, with stakeholders expected to closely monitor the conduct of security agencies and political actors before, during and after the election.
