Popular American country music icon, Dolly Parton, has died at the age of 80. Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, reportedly announced her passing in an Instagram post on Tuesday.
“I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven’t truly felt it until now.
“It is an honour, an honour that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness,” Seaver said
Parton’s career spanned over six decades, rising from humble beginnings in Tennessee to become one of the most celebrated singer-songwriters in country music history.
Tributes have continued to pour in since her passing became public. In honour of the late icon, the president ordered American flags across the country to be lowered for one week.
Dolly Parton’s Background
Born on January 19, 1946, as the fourth of 12 children, Parton grew up in a two-room log cabin along the Little Pigeon River in Tennessee.
Her father worked initially as an uneducated sharecropper before acquiring a small tobacco farm. While Parton described her family as impoverished, she credited her father for instilling a strong work ethic and her mother for fostering her deep connection to traditional folk music.
Renowned as the “Queen of Country,” she sold over 100 million records globally and earned international acclaim with iconic hits such as “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” and “I Will Always Love You.”
Parton began performing as a child, and by age 13, she had released her debut single, “Puppy Love,” performed at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, and appeared on East Tennessee radio and television broadcasts.
She moved to Nashville the day after her high school graduation in 1964, where she began building a reputation as a professional songwriter.
Career and rise to stardom
In 1967, she joined the weekly television broadcast The Porter Wagoner Show and released her debut album, Hello, I’m Dolly. Under the mentorship of Wagoner, an established country music figure, the duo released several successful collaborative records.
Following their professional parting in 1973 as Parton transitioned to focus on her solo career, she composed “I Will Always Love You.” The track became a major hit for Parton before achieving global prominence when Whitney Houston covered it for the 1992 film The Bodyguard.
During the same time, Parton authored another of her signature tracks, “Jolene.” Both songs were featured on her 1974 album Jolene, which significantly broadened her appeal beyond traditional country audiences.
Parton earned 11 Grammy Awards and authored more than 3,000 songs. She also achieved success as an actor, starring in feature films such as 9 to 5, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Steel Magnolias, and Joyful Noise.
Dolly Parton made her feature film debut in the 1980 workplace comedy 9 to 5, starring alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. She also wrote and recorded the movie’s title track, which topped the charts and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.
The film’s success established her acting career, leading to roles in major productions such as The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982), Steel Magnolias (1989), and Joyful Noise (2012).

Beyond her entertainment career, Parton built a business empire encompassing culinary products, television productions, and Dollywood, the Tennessee theme park she invested in and rebranded in 1986.
Dolly Parton was equally recognized for her extensive philanthropic endeavours, particularly through the Dollywood Foundation’s Imagination Library, which promotes early childhood literacy worldwide.
Her humanitarian efforts also included funding disaster relief, supporting medical research, and donating $1 million toward COVID-19 vaccine development. In recognition of her charitable contributions, she was awarded the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy in 2022.
Concerns regarding Parton’s health first emerged when she postponed a planned Las Vegas residency in September 2025. Her public appearances became increasingly rare in the following months as she managed ongoing health challenges.
Her death comes several months after the passing of her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, who died in March 2025 at the age of 82.
