Veteran Canadian actor and voice legend Peter Cullen, best known for providing the iconic voice of Optimus Prime, has died at the age of 85.
According to a statement from his family, Cullen died peacefully on Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by his loved ones. His family did not disclose the cause of death.
Cullen became widely recognised in 1984 when he began voicing Optimus Prime, the noble leader of the Autobots, in the original Transformers animated television series.
His deep, commanding voice and distinctive delivery helped transform Optimus Prime into one of the most recognisable and beloved characters in animation.
Cullen later reprised the role in several Transformers productions, including director Michael Bay’s 2007 live-action adaptation, which introduced the character to a new generation of fans.
Beyond Transformers, Cullen had a distinguished voice-acting career spanning several decades. He was also known for voicing Eeyore, the gentle and gloomy donkey from various Winnie the Pooh productions.
He voiced several other memorable characters, including K.A.R.R. in Knight Rider, while also providing the menacing vocal effects for the Predator in the 1987 science-fiction film Predator.
Cullen’s portrayal of Optimus Prime became deeply associated with the character and left a lasting impact on popular culture.
When Optimus Prime was killed in The Transformers: The Movie in 1986, the character’s death triggered an emotional response from fans, many of whom demanded his return.
Speaking about his enduring connection with Optimus Prime in previous interviews, Cullen once likened returning to the role to “slipping into an old pair of very comfortable shoes,” while expressing gratitude for being part of a franchise that became a global phenomenon.
In their tribute, Cullen’s family described him as a compassionate and principled man whose work touched and inspired generations of fans around the world.
Cullen is survived by his four children, Angus, Claire, Pilar and Clay.
His death marks the end of an era for generations of Transformers fans who grew up hearing his unmistakable voice bring Optimus Prime to life.
