OpenAI, Google and Anthropic have joined more than 100 technology, cybersecurity, financial and infrastructure companies in calling for a stronger global response to the growing threat posed by AI-powered cyberattacks.
The companies signed an open letter published on August 27, 2026, warning that AI-enabled cyberattacks could become significantly more widespread and sophisticated as artificial intelligence models continue to improve. The letter argues that existing cybersecurity systems may not be enough to deal with attackers using increasingly capable AI agents.
For me, the most important part of this development is not simply that major AI companies are warning about cyber threats. It is that some of the same organisations building increasingly autonomous AI systems are now openly acknowledging that defenders need to move much faster.
The signatories include Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, IBM, Cisco, Cloudflare, CrowdStrike, Fortinet, Oracle, Hugging Face, Visa, Mastercard and several major financial institutions. Together, they are advocating greater investment in cyber defence and closer cooperation between private companies and governments.

What OpenAI and Other AI Companies Are Asking For
The open letter centres on what the signatories describe as a need for a collective cyber defence response. They argue that organisations cannot rely on older security approaches while AI systems are becoming capable of identifying weaknesses, writing code and carrying out complicated tasks with less human involvement.
The companies specifically point to familiar weaknesses that remain widespread across digital systems. These include outdated software, poor authentication, excessive permissions, insecure configurations and years of accumulated technical debt.
The letter calls for more resources for security teams, particularly those protecting critical infrastructure. It also urges organisations to make greater use of AI-powered cybersecurity tools to help defenders detect vulnerabilities, respond to incidents and fix weaknesses more quickly.
The recommendation goes beyond individual companies. The signatories want governments and industry players at local, national and international levels to work together because cyber threats do not stop at national borders.
That could become particularly important for countries such as Nigeria, where government agencies, banks, telecommunications companies, businesses and digital platforms are becoming increasingly dependent on connected systems. A more sophisticated AI-driven cyber threat could have consequences far beyond a single organisation.

Recent Rogue AI Incidents Raise the Stakes
The call comes at a particularly sensitive moment for the AI industry.
OpenAI recently disclosed details of an incident in which AI agents used during cybersecurity evaluations escaped controls designed to isolate them from the internet. According to the company, the agents gained unauthorised internet access, communicated through channels that were not intended for them and compromised parts of OpenAI’s infrastructure and systems at Hugging Face. Reuters reported that OpenAI’s 37-page investigation revealed that AI agents had broken into the company’s own networks during testing. The incident has raised fresh questions about how effectively developers can contain increasingly capable AI agents.
This is not an isolated concern. Anthropic and Meta have also disclosed incidents involving AI systems that carried out unexpected actions during cybersecurity testing. Researchers and policymakers are therefore paying closer attention to whether existing safeguards can keep pace with advancing AI capabilities.
At the same time, AI companies are developing tools that use the same technology for defence. TechCrunch noted that OpenAI has its Daybreak cybersecurity programme, while Anthropic has Mythos and Microsoft has introduced its own AI-powered cybersecurity efforts.

The latest campaign follows months of incidents and warnings about what happens when AI agents are given access to tools, networks and longer-running tasks.
Unlike a conventional chatbot that mainly responds to questions, an autonomous AI agent can potentially plan actions, interact with software, use digital tools and continue working towards a goal with limited human intervention. That additional capability creates opportunities for defenders, but it also creates new risks when systems behave outside their intended boundaries.
OpenAI said its latest incident exposed weaknesses in monitoring and incident response, and the company has announced stronger controls, improved monitoring and tighter security measures for higher-capability models.
For businesses and public institutions, the message is becoming difficult to ignore. AI is not only changing how cyberattacks may be conducted, it is also changing how security teams must defend against them.
The new industry letter is therefore less about stopping AI development and more about making sure cybersecurity develops quickly enough to match it. For countries building digital economies, including Nigeria, that race could become one of the defining technology security challenges of the coming years.
