The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike across public universities if federal and state authorities fail to address its outstanding demands.
ASUU President Christopher Piwuna issued the warning in a statement released on Friday.
The union cautioned that industrial action could resume without prior notice, citing the government’s failure to fully implement the December 2025 agreement.
Additional grievances raised by the union include the non-remittance of billions of naira in withheld deductions from lecturers’ salaries.
The warning follows an emergency National Executive Council meeting convened by the union at the University of Abuja.
According to ASUU, the December 2025 agreement followed more than eight years of negotiations and disputes. However, the Federal Government and several state governments had yet to fully implement the agreement.
“Unless immediate and concrete steps are taken to fully and comprehensively address issues bordering on the welfare and well-being of Nigerian academics, ASUU-NEC will not accept any blame for calling out its members on a nationwide strike action within the shortest time possible,” the union warned.
Backstory…
Exactly a month ago, the Academic Staff Union of Universities authorised its branches in 20 universities to issue 14-day ultimatums to their respective managements over the non-implementation of the 2025 agreement reached between the Federal Government and the union.
The decision was taken at ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Abuja on Saturday and Sunday, August 8 and 9, 2026.
According to resolutions signed by the union’s President, Christopher Piwuna, NEC expressed concern over what it described as the inconsistent implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement.
Subsequently following this, the Abia State University, Uturu branch of the union declared an indefinite strike at the institution.
