Military Retirees protest in Abuja

BREAKING: Protesting Military Retirees Block Abuja Pensions Board Entrance

Armed forces veterans blocked the entrance to the Military Pensions Board headquarters in Kubwa, Abuja, on Tuesday over concerns regarding the computation and adjustment of their pensions.

Demonstrators erected canopies and chairs across the complex gates at 8:00 a.m. to protest alleged discrepancies in the implementation of pension increments approved by President Bola Tinubu. Armed military personnel deployed to the facility intercepted the crowd and restricted access to the premises.

The demonstration follows a September protest by military retirees at the Ministry of Defence, where veterans demanded pension reviews aligned with recent salary increases implemented for active-duty service members.

Lt. Col. Innocent Azubike, coordinator of the Veterans Association of Nigeria, accused the board of applying a pension adjustment formula that allegedly shortchanged certain retirees.

Azubike stated that the demonstration reflected mounting frustration among veterans over the handling of significant pension modifications.

The primary point of contention centers on the calculation formula, which veterans argue fails to reflect the recent salary increases implemented for active military personnel.

The Military Retirees argued that the calculation formula used for the increments fails to adequately capture the salary increases granted to active-duty military personnel.

To ensure pension adjustments properly correspond with salary revisions for serving officers, the veterans are demanding an immediate review of the computation method.

The controversy has renewed focus on the welfare of retired military personnel, many of whom depend entirely on their monthly pensions to meet basic living expenses after years of service.

At the time of filing this report, the Military Pensions Board has not yet issued an official statement regarding the latest allegations. Furthermore, it remains unconfirmed whether board officials have initiated dialogue with the demonstrators or if the protest disrupted daily administrative operations.

Backstory…

This comes less that a month after similar development. In September, retired military personnel protested at the Ministry of Defence demanding a pension increase following salary adjustments for serving military officers.

Meanwhile, it also comes following protests by veterans in September 2025.

The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, reportedly assured the retirees that their pensions would increase in October.

This latest demonstration however underscores the persistent dissatisfaction among military veterans regarding the execution and calculation of the promised pension adjustments.
