Subsidy Removal: Remi Tinubu Unveils 50 CNG Buses, ₦1bn Women’s Fund

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu launched a ₦1 billion empowerment fund for 5,000 women in Edo State alongside a fleet of 50 compressed natural gas (CNG) powered buses, aiming to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal.

These initiatives are designed to reduce transportation expenses, support women-led businesses, and expand economic opportunities for citizens.

Addressing the gathering, the First Lady asserted that President Bola Tinubu’s programs reflect his firm commitment to easing the burdens caused by the withdrawal of fuel subsidies.

She further noted that the CNG buses provide residents with a viable alternative amid soaring transit costs, emphasizing that affordable transportation is vital for the daily routines of workers, traders, students, and commuters.

“Behind every bus is a human story. There is a student who needs to get to school. There is a trader who needs to get to the market. There is a civil servant going to work. That is why today’s event is a story of renewed hope,” she said.

Mrs. Tinubu also highlighted employment opportunities within the CNG sector, encouraging the Edo State Government to implement technical training programs to equip young people for roles as CNG bus technicians, engineers, drivers, mechanics, and fleet managers.

Designed to assist 5,000 women, the ₦1 billion empowerment fund aims to stimulate small-scale businesses, elevate household earnings, and boost women’s participation in the economy.

Reacting, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo and Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo commended President Tinubu’s economic reforms and pledged ongoing support for programs addressing the welfare of citizens.

Backstory…

In August 2026, Tinubu and state governors agreed to work towards reducing transport fares by using CNG-powered and electric vehicles. Following their August 27 meeting, the President set October 1, 2026, as the target for more Nigerians to begin experiencing measurable reductions in transportation costs.

Tinubu argued that CNG vehicles could spend 60 to 80 per cent less on fuel than petrol-powered vehicles, but stressed that the savings must translate into lower fares for commuters.

On September 19, Tinubu reiterated the commitment and urged state governments to accelerate implementation of the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme.
