JP Morgan has obtained preliminary approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to establish a merchant banking unit in the country.
A statement issued by the CBN on Friday noted that the proposed lender, JP Morgan Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited, must secure a final banking license from the apex bank prior to commencing operations.
Michael Akuka, Director of Corporate Communications and Investor Relations at the CBN, stated that the approval underscores growing global confidence in Nigeria’s financial sector and broader economic prospects.
According to the CBN, this step aligns with ongoing reforms designed to fortify financial stability, restore market confidence, and deepen Nigeria’s integration into global financial markets.
The central bank stated that this approval follows the completion of the banking sector recapitalization exercise, which enhanced the resilience and capacity of Nigeria’s financial system.
Furthermore, the director clarified that an approval-in-principle serves merely as the initial phase of the regulatory process and does not constitute a final operational license.
“JPMorgan Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited must meet all applicable regulatory requirements, including incorporation with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and the completion of necessary operational and regulatory arrangements, before it can be authorised to commence business,” the bank added.
The apex chief stated that the permission, which coincides with more extensive changes under CBN governor Olayemi Cardoso, aims to improve financial stability, expand financial markets, and rebuild international trust in the nation’s financial system.
Backstory…
This comes just few days after the firm, in a bid to secure a merchant banking license and expand its footprint in Africa’s largest economy, deposited ₦50 billion with the Central
Bank of Nigeria.
According to a Bloomberg report on Tuesday, the deposit—worth approximately $38 million—fulfills a vital requirement in the U.S. financial giant’s application, signaling its readiness to establish a regulated banking operation in Nigeria.
