NECO Opens 2027 SSCE Registration as Schools Face New Examination Requirements

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has opened registration for the 2027 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE Internal), giving secondary schools until February 26, 2027, to register their eligible candidates.

According to information published on NECO’s official website, registration commenced on November 2, 2026. Schools that miss the normal registration period can use the late-registration window from February 27 to March 5, 2027, although an additional fee applies.

The examination itself is scheduled to run from April 1 to May 11, 2027.

The SSCE Internal is specifically designed for students in their final year of senior secondary education. Unlike the SSCE External, which accommodates private candidates, the internal examination is administered through participating schools.

The registration announcement is particularly important for school administrators, who must coordinate candidate information, documentation, payments and other requirements before the examination period begins.

Supervisor Nomination Becomes Mandatory

One significant requirement highlighted in NECO’s 2027 registration announcement is the compulsory nomination of prospective examination supervisors by participating schools.

This means registration involves more than submitting students’ names and paying examination fees. Schools must also complete the prescribed supervisor nomination process through the council’s registration arrangements.

The requirement makes early administrative preparation important, particularly for schools that have not yet organised their examination personnel.

Candidate identification is another important aspect of the registration process. The published registration guidelines include requirements for candidate identification, biometric information and accurate personal records.

Schools should therefore verify students’ details before final submission to reduce avoidable registration errors and complications during examination administration.

NECO has also published instructions for completing offline registration, validating candidate information, activating school accounts and uploading candidates’ records through its online platform.

What Schools and Students Will Pay

NECO has fixed the registration fee at ₦30,000 per candidate. However, this is not the complete cost of the mandatory examination items.

The council lists ₦1,300 for four-figure mathematical tables and ₦2,500 for a waterproof certificate folder, bringing these three charges to ₦33,800 per candidate.

Late registration attracts an additional ₦5,000. Schools registering fewer than 20 candidates may also face a ₦70,000 unviable-centre fee if they intend to conduct the examination on their premises.

These charges make early financial planning important for school administrators and parents. Schools should obtain the current approved payment breakdown directly from NECO rather than rely on unofficial estimates.

Students should also confirm that their schools have completed the registration process and obtained their examination registration numbers.

Back Story: NECO’s Examination Responsibilities

Established in 1999, NECO provides national examinations and certification for students completing secondary education in Nigeria.

Its SSCE Internal examination remains an important qualification for candidates progressing towards tertiary education and other academic opportunities.

The 2027 registration arrangements also reflect the council’s continuing emphasis on examination administration, candidate verification and institutional accountability.

For schools, the immediate priority is to complete registration before February 26 and avoid relying on the additional late-registration period.

The examination timetable and further instructions should be obtained through NECO’s official channels as they become available. Schools and parents can consult the NECO official SSCE Internal examination page for registration updates and guidelines.
