In a recent interview, Cynthia characterised the response as a “strange fascination,” stating that some individuals appeared incapable of seeing that two women could have a close, loving friendship without it being perceived as a romantic relationship. In her portrayal of Elphaba and Glinda, she made it apparent that there was no secret romance but rather a sincere bond.

The rumours also stood in contrast to Ariana’s private life. Since the start of the film’s production, she has been publicly associated with her co-star Ethan Slater in Wicked.
