Governor Agbu Kefas has ordered the deployment of 16 Hummer buses, accompanied by security escorts, to evacuate students of Taraba State affected by recent attacks in Jos.
The by Agbu Kefas move followed reports that several Taraba students were stranded amid rising tension and security concerns in the area.
It would be recalled that the National Union of Taraba State Students (NUTAS), University of Jos Chapter, had earlier appealed to the state government for the urgent evacuation of students from areas affected by the security challenges in Plateau State.
In a letter signed by its president, Sankun Solomon Gam, and assistant secretary-general, Samuel Anyar Bawun Bente, the union raised concerns over the safety and well-being of students living in vulnerable locations.
Government sources confirmed that the buses were swiftly deployed, ensuring the safe relocation of the students to more secure areas. Officials described the evacuation exercise as well-coordinated, with security personnel providing protection throughout the operation.
Governor Agbu Kefas, while addressing the situation over the weekend, reiterated his administration’s commitment to the welfare of Taraba indigenes, particularly students pursuing their education both within Nigeria and abroad. He emphasised that their safety and academic progress remain a top priority.
The evacuation effort has been widely seen and applauded as a proactive response aimed at safeguarding lives and preventing further disruption to the students’ education in the wake of the unrest.
