The highly respected monarch, popularly known as Oba Akran of Badagry, died on January 12, 2026, following a short illness.
His demise marks the end of an illustrious reign that spanned close to five decades, cementing his place as one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Lagos State.
Oba Menu-Toyi I ascended the throne on April 23, 1977, after receiving the approval of the Lagos State Executive Council in 1976, becoming the 17th Akran of Badagry.
Throughout his 48-year reign, he was widely regarded as a stabilising force in the ancient coastal town and its adjoining communities.
Born on September 18, 1936, the late monarch distinguished himself long before becoming king.
He began his professional life as a teacher in schools across the Badagry Division before venturing into journalism.
Akran of Badagry worked with leading national newspapers, including West African Pilot, Daily Sketch and New Nigeria, where he rose to the position of Acting News Editor (South).
His background in education and the media shaped his leadership style, which placed strong emphasis on dialogue, inclusiveness and community development.
Beyond Badagry, Oba Menu-Toyi I played a prominent role in traditional governance at the state level, serving as the Permanent Vice-Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
In recognition of his service to the nation, he was conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic, OFR, in 1981 and awarded honorary degrees, including a Doctor of Laws (LL.D) honoris causa.
His reign was marked by efforts to promote peace, unity and socio-economic progress in Badagry, a town renowned for its historical importance as a former slave port, an early centre of missionary activity, and the birthplace of Western education and Christianity in Nigeria.
Many residents and palace insiders recall him as a compassionate leader and father figure whose counsel and interventions helped guide the community through difficult periods.
The Akran of Badagry Palace confirmed that medical professionals officially pronounced the monarch dead and that traditional burial rites have commenced in line with long-standing customs.
As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Government had yet to issue an official statement, although tributes are expected to pour in from government officials, traditional rulers and residents within and beyond Badagry.
