The Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Ahmed Alkali, has established an investigative committee to determine the cause of the recent train derailment along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences.
This follows the derailment of a train on August 26, 2025, near Jerre, while it was traveling from Abuja to Kaduna.
In a statement issued by Janet McDickson Noah, Director of Press and Information, the minister instructed that a committee made up of all relevant stakeholders be formed to investigate both the immediate and underlying factors that led to the incident.
The committee with Alkali will also recommend preventive measures and identify strategies to enhance the safety and efficiency of rail transportation in Nigeria.
Expressing concern for passenger safety, Alkali appointed Musa O. Ibrahim as chair of the committee.
Other members include Prof. Danwaka Shuaibu; Engr. Zirra Finbar; Barr. Omotola Olusegun (as secretary); Dr. Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation; Engr. I.A. Ebuniwe; and representatives of Technics Engineering, Architecture Marketing Nig. Ltd, CCECC, and civil society organisations, as well as male and female passengers.
