In a surprising revelation, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claims that Apple has “largely written off” its flagship Mac Pro desktop. According to his recent Power On newsletter, the company’s internal sentiment now strongly favours the Mac Studio as the cornerstone of its professional desktop lineup, per MacRumors.
Gurman suggests that the next-generation M5 Ultra chip — which many had hoped would power a refreshed Mac Pro — is instead being reserved solely for a new Mac Studio model. At the same time, he warns that the Mac Pro “won’t be updated in 2026 in a significant way.”

Why the Shift? Mac Studio’s Rising Star
Inside Apple, the Mac Studio is increasingly perceived not just as an alternative but as the future of its high-performance computers. Gurman’s report paints a picture of a company recalibrating its desktop strategy — one where the large, modular Mac Pro is being sidelined.
Indeed, the Mac Studio makes a compelling case: it delivers ultra-high performance with Apple Silicon, while being more compact and cost-effective than the traditional Mac Pro tower. To some, the Mac Pro now seems redundant — especially when Studio can offer comparable speed without the bulk and higher price tag.

The Status of the M-Series Chips
The last time Apple gave the Mac Pro an update was in June 2023, when it received the M2 Ultra chip. Since then, speculation had mounted about an M4 Ultra-powered Mac Pro in the works. But according to Gurman, Apple scrapped any M4 Ultra plans, and the next major silicon release — the M5 Ultra — is being devoted exclusively to the Mac Studio.
While Gurman hasn’t completely ruled out a future Mac Pro refresh, he says he has yet to hear anything concrete about a new tower with M5 Ultra.

What This Means for Mac Pro’s Future
From the inside, Apple seems to be placing its bets on the Mac Studio as the future-defining pro desktop. The phrase “largely written off” is pretty telling — it implies that the Mac Pro, in its current form, is no longer central to Apple’s long-term vision.
To many professional users, the Mac Pro tower offered modularity: PCIe slots, expandability, and raw power. But with Apple pushing silicon integration and streamlining its product lines, that legacy might be fading.
Of course, this doesn’t mean the Mac Pro is officially discontinued — yet. Gurman notes he hasn’t heard Apple explicitly say it’s killed the line, but the lack of a major update in 2026 raises serious doubts.
