President Bola Tinubu has come under fire from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the alleged assault and kidnapping of his son, Seyi.

Seyi has faced criticism for alleged kidnapping and violence, which his camp has categorically denied and characterised as politically driven.

The National Association of Nigerian Students’ factional president, Atiku Isah, is at the centre of the controversy. He claimed in an Abuja press conference that he was tortured and kidnapped on April 15 after refusing a N100 million bribe purportedly offered by Seyi and Ayodele Olawande, the Minister of Youth Development, to back Tinubu’s government.

After declining the offer, Isah claimed that unknown thugs stripped him, assaulted him, and detained him against his will.

According to the NANS leader, the bribe attempt was made during a meeting in Lagos, and the incident happened soon after.

Seyi, however, denied ever meeting Isah and being a part of any such occurrence in a reaction posted on his Instagram stories.

He called the accusations “a fabrication intended to damage his reputation.”

In support of the president’s son, Sunday Asefon, a former president of NANS and Special Assistant to the President on Student Affairs, claimed that Isah was being supported by political figures, such as former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who he said was trying to topple Tinubu’s government before 2027, further providing photos of the NANS presidnet with notable figures including Atiku, El-rufai and Sowore.

Atiku condemned the student leader’s claimed intimidation through his media adviser, Paul Ibe, and cautioned that Nigeria shouldn’t be run as the  private property of the president or his family.

Additionally, he urged Nigerians to oppose any attempt to stifle criticism and demanded an independent probe of Isah’s charges.

“It is intolerable that the first family would seek to subjugate NANS or any civil society group through threats, bribes, or brute force,

“The presidency is a public trust, not a private inheritance,” Atiku said.
