The announcement was made in a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, Badaru’s resignation was conveyed in a letter dated December 1, 2025.

Onanuga said the Baduaru in the letter cited health reasons for his decision.

The statement noted that Tinubu has accepted the resignation, thanked him for his service, and is expected to notify the Senate of a successor later this week.

Badaru Abubakar, 63, served as governor of Jigawa state from 2015 to 2023. He was appointed as a minister on August 21, 2023, by President Tinubu.

His resignation comes amid President Tinubu’s declaration of a national security emergency, with plans to elaborate on its scope in due course.

Nigeria has experienced widespread insecurity recently, especially abductions and killings.

Tinubu earlier met with Christopher Musa, the immediate Past Chief of Defence Staff.

It is unclear if this has to do with the vacant role at Nigeria’s Defence Ministry.
