President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly backed the decision of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) to adopt Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The development points to increasing unity among key political figures in Lagos as preparations for the next election cycle gather pace.
Sources indicate that President Tinubu met on Wednesday with members of the GAC, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Hamzat at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The meeting, which began around 2:30 p.m., was attended by prominent APC stakeholders from Lagos and is viewed as part of ongoing consultations on the state’s political succession and internal party arrangements ahead of 2027.
As of the time of this report, details of the discussions have not been made public. However, the meeting comes amid rising political activity within the Lagos APC, following the GAC’s earlier endorsement of Hamzat as its preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship race.
The GAC, regarded as the highest decision-making advisory body of the party in Lagos, recently backed Hamzat following internal consultations and party-wide consensus-building efforts.
Sanwo-Olu announced the endorsement after a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat officially declared his intention to run for the governorship seat before members of the State Executive Council and key party leaders.
