Less than 72 hours after 287 schoolchildren and teachers were abducted from the LEA Primary School and the Government Secondary School in Kuriga, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, fifteen pupils of an Islamiya school in Sokoto State were kidnapped in the early hours of Saturday.

However, on Sunday, it was reported that 28 of them had managed to escape, leaving 259 still in captivity.

Just days before the incident in Kaduna, terrorists also abducted 200 female Internally Displaced Persons in Borno State.

Penultimate Thursday, an undisclosed number of individuals were abducted by bandits in the Gonin-Gora community within the same Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna. This incident led residents to block the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway in protest.

In response to the April 2014 abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls, the Safe Schools Initiative was launched by the United Nations Special Envoy for Global Education, Gordon Brown, alongside the Nigerian Global Business Coalition for Education and private sector leaders at the World Economic Forum Africa.

The initiative encompasses a combination of interventions, including measures within schools, community efforts to safeguard schools, and specific strategies for vulnerable populations.

The Federal Government established the Safe Schools Fund, with an initial contribution of $10 million and an additional $10 million pledged by the private sector.
