According to the Minister, Nigeria has seen a departure of 16,000 doctors within a span of five years.

The Federal Government revealed on Sunday that the country currently has 55,000 licensed doctors to cater to the increasing number of patients due to the departure of health professionals to hospitals and health facilities abroad.

In the past five years, it was disclosed that Nigeria has lost approximately 15,000 to 16,000 doctors to the “Japa syndrome,” with an additional 17,000 doctors having been transferred.

Prof. Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, made these statements during his appearance as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today. https://naijaeyesblog.com/

Pate emphasized that the brain drain phenomenon has deprived the health sector of its most skilled professionals. He reassured that the government is making efforts to expand training programs and incentivize those who choose to remain and serve their country.

However, the minister emphasized that despite there being 300,000 health professionals in Nigeria, only 55,000 of them are doctors.

He stated, “There are approximately 300,000 health professionals currently working in Nigeria across all cadres, including doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, and others. Through our assessment, we discovered that there are between 85,000 to 90,000 registered Nigerian doctors. Not all of them remain in the country; some reside in the Diaspora, particularly in the US and UK. Nevertheless, there are 55,000 licensed doctors practicing within the country. https://naijaeyesblog.com/
